This holiday season, we ask you to reflect on the power of hope and kindness. At the Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC), we’ve seen firsthand how even in the darkest moments, hope can transform lives. One mother’s story touched us deeply, and we’d love to share it with you…
Escaping domestic violence, Traci found herself living in her car with her infant son. Every night, she faced the heartbreaking reality of putting her baby to sleep in the back seat, unsure of what the next day would bring. Her two other children, left behind in Texas with family, felt a world away as she fought to create a future where they could all be together again.
But Traci refused to give up. When she reached out to CAPC, our Family Advocate Brittany knew this mother needed more than just resources—she needed hope. Brittany worked tirelessly, bridging the miles between California and Texas, helping Traci reconnect with the social services that could make reunification with her children possible. In the meantime, we found Traci shelter so she and her baby could finally have a safe place to rest.
With support from CAPC, Traci has taken incredible strides. She’s now enrolled in Delta Community College, pursuing her dream of a degree in culinary arts and business management. She’s actively searching for permanent housing, and for the first time in a long time, she can see a future where her children will grow up safe and together.
Families like Traci’s are why we launched the HOME (Homeless Outreach & Meaningful Engagement) program. Across our community, families with children are living in encampments and on the streets, often feeling forgotten and fearful of reaching out for help. They distrust law enforcement and worry that seeking assistance might only bring more harm. That’s why HOME is different—we meet them where they are, building relationships grounded in trust, compassion, and hope.
When tragedy strikes in these fragile spaces, parents need someone they can turn to without fear, someone who understands that their children’s safety and wellbeing must come first. With HOME, we are that trusted partner, walking alongside families like Traci’s, providing the vital support they need to rebuild their lives.
